I Drew a bunch of Eyes with Crayola Crayons and Here Is What Repetition Actually Teaches You
I wanted to fill a sketchbook spread with eyes and see if I could get better just by drawing the same subject over and over. I also wanted to use a tool that I already had that I never really use.
A sketchbook spread of eyes drawn with Crayola Crayons.
I used multiple different colored crayons to fill a sketchbook spread.
What did my process look like when drawing eyes with crayons?
I used one Crayola crayon per eye.
One color only, so I could focus on the values.
My references photos were from Unsplash, trying to focus on different angles each time.
No erasing. All my mistakes had to stay on the page.
I focused on the shapes and the lines of the eye.
I tried to keep the shapes in a simple form like a straight line or a circle.
I used a different color per eye so my spread would look fun.
What did I learn from doing all of this?
I improved after each eye drawing.
You learn from the mistakes you make. Mistakes help you grow.
I felt more confident as I was drawing each eye.
I was able to achieve a wide variety of values by using the pressure of my hand.
The no-erasing rule was difficult at first and then became the whole point. You just move on and do better next time. It made me think with every line I laid down.
